Hello Parents,
Do you shop at Stop and Shop? If not, consider this...
1. For every $100 you spend you earn a $10 gift card.
2. For every Scrips Stop and Shop gift card you buy
you earn 2.4% back toward tuition.
3. When you register your Stop and Shop card you then
help the school earn money for every dollar you spend!
So, let's say you spend $500 a month on groceries. This is what you would earn:
1. $50 in gift cards toward next month's groceries
2. $12 a month off tuition (that's $120 a year!)
3, More $ for the school. (% depends on what is spent)
So, please register your Stop and Shop card at the Customer Service desk when you go next time, or e-mail you card number to Milford Christian Academy and someone will register it for you.
Happy Shopping!

Project Based Learning Introduction
Project Based Learning PBL
To learn about the specific PBL curriculum that MCA will be using this year please investigate the following site, Buck Institute of Education, BIE. http://www.bie.org/index.php/site/PBL/pbl_handbook/
This website is extensive (please investigate the comprehensive menu) and designed to give teachers and parents a close look at the process their students will use. This PBL program is designed especially for middle and high school students. The great benefit to teachers is the fact that it allow students of different learning styles and academic ability to work successfully side by side.
MCA will be adding a Biblical Worldview component to this proven program. We will be following this handbook very closely. You will find much information that will help you support your child this year. You may be asked to mentor a student in your area of expertise. This manual will be your guide. More on Orientation night.

Exciting Reading Program for Elementary
Hello Elementary Parents,
Mrs. Hallowell and I are so excited about the upcoming school year. I wanted to let you know about an exciting two day seminar we attended on DIBELS. What is that? You are most likely wondering. Well, it stands for The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. It is something that many school districts, including Milford, use to help pinpoint literacy problems in children early on. It is basically a standardized test that is given to a student three times throughout the school year. Through this series of tests a teacher is able to find out what area of reading a child is struggling in. It’s also a great way to determine which reading group a child should be in. If a child is tested and an area of struggle identified, then the teacher and the parents work close together to put into place a plan. The child is monitored again two weeks later to see if the change is working. If it’s working great, if not, a different plan is put into place and so on. This year, we are planning on testing the first and third graders to start. We may end up testing all the kids, but we wanted to commit to what we know we could handle. You can get more information on DIBELS at http://dibels.uoregon.edu.
Also, I wanted to mention to you that we are looking for a few moms to help out with reading groups this year. I am a person who likes to have all my ducks lined up in a neat little row, so if you are interested, please drop me an e-mail to let me know. Thanks so much. You can e-mail me at petraforce@aol.com.
Looking forward to seeing all of you this year!
In Him,
Mrs. Lehoux

Building Community through volunteerism
What does volunteering at MCA / PDE mean?
MCA /PDE volunteerism represents ownership and community. The new structure of MCA is designed to reduce overhead cost and make Christian school affordable to moderate income families. Volunteering is not only a way to defer direct cost, but to build a sense of community and ownership. We predicate the quality of our program on families participating in necessary and essential ways. No one job is more glorious or essential than any other. The Bible speaks very clearly of distinct parts making up the perfectly functioning body. Each part needs the other. For example, if you are a family that does not have the flex time to work on site, or could afford to pay the additional $500 in lieu of 40 hours of volunteer service, this would allow MCA to hire the needed service that the school family does not have within its direct resources. The following list represents a variety of diverse jobs that need to be filled, but equally important, to build community and ownership.
· Teaching Fine Arts, music, drama, computer or other enrichment classes.
· Janitorial or maintenance work weekends or after school
· AM Receptionist 8 – 9 AM, not necessarily everyday
· AM arrival and PM dismissal monitors.
· Reading group and teacher aide
· Monitors for study hall, computer lab, PBL
· Recess and lunch monitors
Others areas of service:
· School event days
· Field trips
· Workday, late Aug TBA
Many have already volunteered, some have already completed their hours this summer, and some we have not heard from. Please email MCA to signup or inquire more about any particular area of service. Your email will be directed to the appropriate person. info@milfordchristianacademy.org
* Any job that requires student interaction comes with training. You will be supported and instructed.
