Exciting Reading Program for Elementary

Hello Elementary Parents,

Mrs. Hallowell and I are so excited about the upcoming school year. I wanted to let you know about an exciting two day seminar we attended on DIBELS. What is that? You are most likely wondering. Well, it stands for The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. It is something that many school districts, including Milford, use to help pinpoint literacy problems in children early on. It is basically a standardized test that is given to a student three times throughout the school year. Through this series of tests a teacher is able to find out what area of reading a child is struggling in. It’s also a great way to determine which reading group a child should be in. If a child is tested and an area of struggle identified, then the teacher and the parents work close together to put into place a plan. The child is monitored again two weeks later to see if the change is working. If it’s working great, if not, a different plan is put into place and so on. This year, we are planning on testing the first and third graders to start. We may end up testing all the kids, but we wanted to commit to what we know we could handle. You can get more information on DIBELS at http://dibels.uoregon.edu.

Also, I wanted to mention to you that we are looking for a few moms to help out with reading groups this year. I am a person who likes to have all my ducks lined up in a neat little row, so if you are interested, please drop me an e-mail to let me know. Thanks so much. You can e-mail me at petraforce@aol.com.

Looking forward to seeing all of you this year!

In Him,

Mrs. Lehoux
